Episode 3 - First Females Podcast

Breaking Barriers: A Conversation with Lydia Bradey

The latest episode of First Females is here, and it’s one you don’t want to miss. This time, I had the absolute privilege of sitting down with New Zealander Lydia Bradey - the first woman in the world to climb Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen. Lydia’s story isn’t just about climbing Everest; it’s about resilience, decision-making under extreme conditions, and a lifelong connection to the mountains.

The Journey to Everest

Lydia didn’t grow up as a natural athlete - far from it. She admits she was terrible at sports as a child, but she discovered a love for the outdoors through tramping in New Zealand (serious backcountry hiking). That love turned into a deep passion for mountaineering, eventually leading her to high-altitude expeditions in the Himalayas.

By the time she reached Everest in 1988, Lydia was already an experienced climber. But nothing could compare to the challenge ahead, taking on the highest mountain on Earth without supplemental oxygen, alone and without fixed ropes above the South Col.

Summiting Solo & Without Oxygen

For Lydia, reaching the summit was the moment where relief finally set in. She describes the physical and mental battle of climbing Everest without oxygen, the intense decision-making required at every step, and the sheer exhaustion of getting back down safely. It’s a story that highlights her strength, skill, and determination like few others.

Meeting Junko

Lydia met Junko Tabei in Japan in 1995, at an event organised by Junko and members of the 1975 Japanese Women’s Everest Expedition team. Lydia described Junko as “an absolute rock star. Honestly, she was a goddess and nobody better could have become the first woman to climb Everest”. She also talks about how Junko harnessed her fame for the greater good, particularly the environment.

Guiding the Next Generation

Since her historic ascent, Lydia has gone on to guide others on Everest and on mountains around the world. We talked about how mountaineering has evolved, how she approaches guiding today, and her thoughts on resilience - both in climbing and in life. Her insights into how decision-making plays into every aspect of an expedition are invaluable, whether you’re summiting Everest or navigating everyday challenges.

Lydia’s story is one of grit, determination, and breaking barriers. If you love hearing about adventure, perseverance, and the lessons learned in the mountains, this episode is for you.
