Episode 2 - First Females Podcast
Fearless & Focused: A Conversation with Hannah Shields
My second episode of First Females is here, and this time I’m joined by an unstoppable force - Hannah Shields, the first woman from Northern Ireland to summit Everest. Her story is one of resilience, grit, and an unshakable determination to push beyond limits, both on the mountain and in life.
A Life of Adventure
Hannah grew up in the countryside of Northern Ireland, where her love for the outdoors was sparked early. From climbing, cycling, and running with the boys, to launching dolls from windows with makeshift parachutes (much to her sisters’ horror), she was always drawn to risk, challenge, and adventure. That spirit only grew stronger over the years, leading her to ultra-marathons, extreme endurance sports, and some of the most remote landscapes on Earth.
In 2004, she became the first Irish woman to ski to the North Magnetic Pole as part of the grueling 360-mile Polar Challenge, an experience that deepened her understanding of resilience, teamwork, and survival in harsh conditions. But the dream of Everest never left her mind.
The Road to Everest
Hannah’s journey was far from straightforward. A devastating health battle in her late 20s saw her facing multiple organ failure, unable to train or work, and forced to reevaluate everything. But through sheer determination and the support of her family, she fought her way back, choosing to chase adventure rather than settle for limits imposed by circumstance.
Her Everest journey began with an Irish expedition in 1993, where she first laid eyes on the mountain. That moment cemented her goal - one day, she would stand on top. Years of relentless training followed, including countless endurance races and technical climbing challenges, each preparing her for what lay ahead.
Survival & Success
In 2007, Hannah reached Everest’s summit from the north side, overcoming brutal conditions, frozen contact lenses, and a terrifying realization that she was hemorrhaging oxygen. But perhaps the most defining moment came not from her own climb, but in an encounter with a stranded climber high on the mountain. Against all odds, Hannah managed to get him on his feet and short-rope him down the slopes - proving that sometimes, a mission bigger than summiting awaits in the death zone.

Hannah’s story is one of resilience, mental fortitude, and an unwavering commitment to living life fully. From standing on Everest to recovering from a near-fatal accident in 2018, she continues to inspire with her ability to adapt, overcome, and keep pushing forward.
This episode is packed with raw, unfiltered insight into the highs and lows of extreme adventure, the lessons learned in survival, and the importance of always looking ahead.
